It's not really good UX to have an alert, because it can easily be blocked by the user. Could you implement some other solution?

the only reason why I made it so - I wanted to keep it as light as possible

Turns out you actually can't have a popup as the text will then lose it's focus.. Not sure how to implement a solution for this hmm.

yes, its pretty tricky
